Neuromuscular Dentistry/TMJ Therapy

Diagnostic Technologies and Therapies for TMJ Disorder

As a highly trained LVI dentist, Dr. Schwam uses modern tools and technologies to assess and treat neuromuscular/TMJ conditions. We invite you to undergo a neuromuscular/TMJ exam and experience the benefits of targeted treatments to restore dental health and harmony. If Dr. Schwam finds that you require treatment from other medical professionals, he'll refer you to trusted doctors who'll deliver the personalized care you deserve.

Sonography: A sonogram records the sounds made by jaw joint activity. Dr. Schwam uses sonography to detect unacceptable contractions and extensions of the jaw joint. This analysis helps him determine whether jaw joint function contributes to tooth or facial pain and aids in treatment planning. A sonogram is a non-invasive test. You'll wear a device similar to music headphones, only these headphones assess your jaw function.

Computerized Mandibular Scanning (CMS): CMS measures jaw movement and detects factors that may contribute to abnormal TMJ function, including disc problems. You'll be able to see your CMS readings on a chairside computer monitor during the test. CMS data is most helpful when used in conjunction with EMG recordings.

Electromyography (EMG): We use surface EMG to determine jaw muscle function and locate your jaw joint's optimal resting position. EMG technology helps Dr. Schwam locate the areas in your jaw joints that are causing the most distress. We'll place comfortable, non-invasive sensors on your face and jaw to determine function and display the readings on your chairside computer monitor.

Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation (TENS): To achieve jaw, muscle, and nerve harmony, we relax facial and jaw muscles with a TENS unit. This proven technology has been around for over 30 years and is used by a variety of medical professionals. TENS emits low frequency, rhythmic electrical impulses to relax muscles and nerves and increase blood flow to flush toxins. This stimulation alleviates TMJ pain and lets Dr. Schwam identify ideal jaw and bite positions.
