Gum Disease Therapy
Gum disease can spoil your smile and compromise your overall health. A sneaky offender, gum disease may have few or no symptoms, and it affects up to 80% of the population. Left untreated, gum disease can progress to cause tooth, bone, and gum loss, as well as complications for pregnant women and diabetics, increased risk for heart attack, and other serious problems. Dr. Schwam offers a soft tissue management program to treat gum disease and improve periodontal health.
Early-stage gum disease, called gingivitis, may present few or no symptoms. Your gums may appear red and swollen, and you might see blood when you brush your teeth. We treat gingivitis with a thorough teeth cleaning by one of our skilled hygienists, as well as instruction on effective brushing and flossing techniques. Moderate cases of gum disease often respond well to scaling, root planing, and antibiotic therapy. If your gum disease is severe, Dr. Schwam may suggest laser dentistry to remove diseased tissue. Lasers seal tissue as they work, so bleeding is minimal, and you won't need stitches. We'll assess your unique situation and recommend the treatment option that's right for you.
